David Austin Roses

Abraham Darby

A well-formed shrub of shapely, bushy growth. In early summer it is studded with large, deeply cupped blooms in shades of pink, apricot and yellow, and in spite of their size, these continue to be produced for the remainder of the season. An excellent vigorous shrub.  A rich, fruity fragrance with a refreshing sharpness.

It repeats well but summer pruning will encourage a better crop of flowers and help maintain a more compact plant.  5 ft. x 5 ft. (shrub); 8 ft. (climber)

Benjamin Britten

Here is a variety of unusual coloring for an English Rose - strong salmon-pink that changes with age to a particularly strong shade of pure pink. Deeply cupped flowers gradually develop into an open, slightly cupped rosette.

Benjamin Britten is a useful rose to provide a highlight among the softer shades of most English Roses. It is of medium height; vigorous, with dense growth and excellent foliage. Ideal for the border or may be grown in a large pot or container. The fragrance is intensely fruity, with aspects of wine and pear drops. Benefits from summer pruning. 4 ft. x 3 ft. or 8-10 ft. climber

Named to commemorate the life and work of the famous English composer, conductor and performer.

Carding Mill

A flower of beautifully mixed shades of pink, apricot and yellow, overall, giving the impression of rich apricot. At the bud stage, when the petals are just starting to unfurl, the inside of the petals are a very rich, deep apricot as opposed to the paler, soft yellow undersides. When fully open the center of the flower is well filled with petals, their closeness giving the impression of a rich, apricot - pink. Around the center, the loose ring of petals curl in slightly and so show their pale apricot yellow undersides.

It will quickly make a bushy, rounded shrub with straight stems, the many flowers nodding just slightly. There is a strong and beautiful myrrh fragrance.

Carding Mill is an extremely beautiful valley in the Long Mynd just to the west of our nursery in Shropshire. 4 x 3 1/2ft.

Crocus Rose
This is a very robust and free flowering rose, bearing large, rosette-shaped flowers that are cupped at first; the petals later reflexing. The colour is soft apricot, paling to cream on the outer petals. The flowers are produced very freely, in large clusters elegantly poised on the end of slightly arching stems. They have a delightful Tea Rose fragrance. 4 ft. x 3 ft.

Evelyn

Evelyn bears giant, apricot colored flowers of a shallow, saucer-like shape, with numerous small petals inter-twined within. This is not the most vigorous of English Roses, but the individual flower is absolutely magnificent. Its great glory is its wonderful fragrance, which is similar in style to an Old Rose, but with a sumptuous fruity note reminiscent of fresh peaches and apricot. 4 ft. x 3 ft. (6 ft. as climber)

Named on behalf of Crabtree & Evelyn, who used it in their range of rose perfumes.

Falstaff

Falstaff bears large crimson flowers with a shallow, cupped shape. They are of exquisite form and quality, packed with numerous petals which interfold at the centre. This helps to create a lovely, glowing effect within an enclosed saucer of outer petals. The blooms are a rich, dark crimson coloring at first, eventually turning to a wonderful shade of rich purple. There is a powerful Old Rose fragrance.

The growth is strong, bushy and rather upright, with the flowers nodding nicely on the stem. The foliage is quite large and rather modern in character. If you want to grow this rose as a shrub it may benefit from summer pruning. 4 ft. x 3.5 ft. or 6 ft. as a climber

This variety is named for the well-loved Shakespearean character, who was the faithful companion of Prince Henry.

Happy Child

Has broad shallowly cupped flowers of an exceptionally deep yellow - deeper than that of any other English Rose. The leaves are unusual for an English Rose, in that they are thick and highly polished with an almost camellia-like appearance, that goes well with the yellow of the flowers. The growth is slightly arching, making an attractive little shrub. There is a delicious Tea Rose fragrance. 3 ft. x 3ft.

Heritage (Ausblush)

One of the most popular English Roses. The blooms have perfect, cupped form , medium size; soft, clear pink at the centre, while the outer petals are almost white. This is a flower of delicate shell-like beauty. The growth is excellent, showing signs of its grandparent Iceberg, with a smooth, rather ‘Musk Rose’ foliage and clean stems with only a few thorns. It is strong and bushy with excellent repeat-flowering properties and will grow to form a shapely, well-rounded shrub, beautiful fragrance, with overtones of fruit, honey and carnation on a myrrh background. 5 ft. x 4 ft. (7 ft. as climber)

Jude The Obscure
‘Jude the Obscure’ vies with Golden Celebration for the first place as the most magnificent of the English Roses. Its flowers are very large and of incurved chalice shape. Their color is a pleasing medium yellow on the inside of the petals and a paler yellow on the outside. It has excellent, strong and almost completely disease-free growth. This rose is particularly fine in a dry climate, although it may ball in the rain. A very strong, unusual and delicious fragrance with a fruity note reminiscent of guava and sweet white wine. 4 ft. x 4 ft. or 8 ft. as a climber

Named after the character in Thomas Hardy’s novel.

L D Braithwaite (Auscrim)
This rose has the brightest crimson coloring of all the English Roses; standing out when viewed from across the garden. It is related to Mary Rose and has many of that rose's good garden qualities. The blooms open wide and are slightly cupped. They are produced freely and flower with remarkable continuity. It forms a medium-sized, bushy shrub which looks particularly beautiful when grown in a mixed border.  There is little scent until the flower ages, when it develops a charming Old Rose fragrance. 4.5 x 4ft.

Named for David C. H. Austin’s father-in-law, Leonard Braithwaite.

Lady of Megginch (Ausvolume)

With its large, richly colored flowers, this is a particularly impressive variety. The blooms commence as pretty, rounded buds gradually opening to form very large, full, cupped, rosette shaped flowers with the outer petals recurving back slightly. The color is a very rich, deep pink; slightly tinged with deep orange at first and then changing to a deep rose pink. There is a good, fruity Old Rose fragrance with a definite hint of raspberry.

Depending on how hard it is pruned, it will grow into a medium or large shrub of rather upright, but bushy habit. It is very vigorous and healthy. This rose will create some excitement in a border of softer colors.

Megginch Castle in Perth, Scotland, is the family home of the late Baroness Strange, who was President of the War Widows' Association until her death in 2005. She did much good work on behalf of war widows and was well known for her love of flowers and her rose garden. 4 ft. x 3 ft.

The flowers are of a rich yellow color. It has a characteristic Tea Rose fragrance with a musky background. Named for the Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. 3 ft x 2 ft.

Pat Austin (Ausmum)

Named after David Austin’s wife, this is an entirely new color break in English Roses; a bright copper on the inside of the petals, with pale copper-yellow on the outer sides, a similar effect to ‘Austrian Copper’ (R. foetida bicolor).

The flowers are large and deeply cupped, so that we get contrasting colors between the two sides of the petals, giving a most attractive effect. The growth is strong and of a similar type to Golden Celebration and Abraham Darby.

Tea-scented with a warm, sensuous background. May need summer pruning to maintain as a shrub.  5 ft. x 3.5 ft

Scepter'd Isle
This bears numerous, cupped flowers, with yellow stamens visible within. The color is a soft pink shading to a paler pink on the outer petals. Its growth is rather upright, with its flowers held above the foliage. It flowers freely and continuously.
There is a powerful fragrance - an outstanding example of the English Rose fragrance, based on the myrrh note introduced with Constance Spry. Winner of the R.N.R.S. Henry Edland Award for fragrance. Summer pruning will help to maintain the height and encourage quicker repeat flowering.  4 ft. x 2.5 ft.

Sharifa Asma (Ausreef)

An exquisite rose of true Old Rose charm. The blooms are shallowly cupped at first and gradually reflex to form a perfect rosette. A most delicate blush pink, fading to almost white on the outer petals. Short, rather upright growth.

One of the most beautiful English Roses, but it can be damaged by very hot sun. A distinctive and beautiful fragrance with fruity notes reminiscent of white grapes and mulberry. 4 ft. x 3 ft.

Strawberry Hill bears medium sized, pure rose pink, cupped rosettes of superb quality. Their color gradually pales to a lighter pink at the edges of the petals, eventually exposing glimpses of yellow stamens at the centre. The blooms are beautiful at all stages.

The growth is tall, vigorous and rather informal, with small clusters of blooms held on slightly arching branches. Strawberry Hill is very healthy with glossy, dark green foliage. This is a wonderful choice for a position to the rear of a mixed border, or for a border of shrub roses. A strong and delicious myrrh and (heather) honey fragrance. Strawberry Hill was awarded the Prix d'Honneur for fragrance from Nantes in 2007. 4 x 4 ft

Strawberry Hill is named to commemorate a beautiful house at Twickenham, built by Horace Walpole, the youngest son of the first British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, in the style of the Gothic revival. He laid out a fine garden which is currently being restored. (Leander Group)
 .

Sweet Juliet (Ausleap)

Attractive, neatly formed and medium-sized rosettes in shades of glowing apricot. The growth is particularly strong, sending up numerous upright branches from the base - making it suitable for further back in the border. For good flowers, this variety requires pruning to half its size. Reliable and disease resistant. A delightfully fresh fragrance in the tea rose tradition, developing a cool lemon character as the flower develops. It may need summer pruning in some areas to help maintain its height and encourage quicker repeat flowering. 5 ft. x 4. ft.

Tamora (Austamora)

One of the earlier varieties, and still a very worthwhile rose. It is closely related to the old Gloire de Dijon and it has inherited both its apricot color and fragrance. It forms a short bush, suitable either for rose bed or border. The flowers are at first attractively rounded, opening to a shallow cup. It has a remarkable and unusual fragrance with aspects of lilac and mimosa. 3 ft. x 3 ft

The name comes from Shakespeare’s play,'Titus Andronicus'.

The Alnwick Rose
Pretty rich pink, cup shaped buds gradually open to a deeply cupped flower; later developing into a broad, full-petaled, shallow cup of a soft pink which is paler at the outer edges - a most pleasing progression. The flowers are beautiful at all stages; this illustrates very well the great variety of form to be found in the Old Rose style. 'The Alnwick Rose' has nice rounded, bushy growth and produces its bloom intermittently from early summer to the onset of frost. Plentiful green foliage ideally complements the flower. There is a good Old Rose fragrance with just a hint of raspberry. 4 ft. x 2.5 ft.

We are pleased to name this rose after the superb Alnwick Garden. The Duke and Duchess of Northumberland are constructing what we believe will be one of the great gardens of Britain, which will include many English Roses.

The Dark Lady
A dark, dusky crimson rose, with rather loosely formed flowers that open wide and hang elegantly. They have a special character of their own, which reminds us of the flowers of tree peonies, as sometimes seen on fabrics and wallpapers. It forms a shapely, spreading bush. The bush is small at first but over time becomes quite large, reaching a medium height. It bears attractive, large, dark green leaves which are rough in texture, resembling those of its Rosa rugosa parentage. There is a light Old Rose fragrance. This variety is particularly happy in Mediterranean-type climates and in the southern USA.  4 x 4ft.

The name is taken from the mysterious Dark Lady of Shakespeare’s sonnets.

The Squire
S, dr, 1981, Austin, David; bud globular; flowers very dark red, large, heavy, 120 petals, cupped, borne 1 - 3 per cluster, intense, old rose fragrance; recurrent; foliage dark; prickles straight; open, bushy (3 ft.) growth
[The Knight × Château de Clos Vougeot]

The Prince (Ausvelvet)
Flowers at first the deepest, richest crimson imaginable, but quickly turning to an equally rich royal purple not to be confused with the sometimes jarring purples of many modern roses. Cupped rosette shape. Dusky, dark green foliage. Requires generous treatment. There is a strong Old Rose fragrance of the character associated with some of the darker Gallicas. 2.5 ft. x 2 ft.

Tradescant
A most attractive rose, with flowers of the richest crimson borne on graceful arching growth, providing a most beautiful effect. In a warm climate it will grow vigorously and if desired, will grow into a climber. In cool climates we expect it to be shorter. The shallow-cupped flowers are packed with petals, perfectly arranged in a rosette formation. It does not burn readily in the sun. It has the delicious deep rich Old Rose fragrance which we expect from crimson roses, but do not always get. 4 ft. x 4 ft. or 8 ft. as a climber.

‘Tradescant’ was a famous botanist of the 17th century.
